Pterophyllum is a small genus of freshwater fish from the family Cichlidae known to most aquarists as angelfish. All Pterophyllum species originate in the Amazon Basin, Orinoco Basin and various rivers in the Guiana Shield in tropical South America

🐠 Freshwater Angelfish (Genus: Pterophyllum)

  • Family: Cichlidae (same as discus, oscars, and African cichlids).

  • Native Habitat: Slow-moving rivers, swamps, and flooded areas of the Amazon Basin (Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Guyana).

  • Shape: Tall, laterally compressed body with long dorsal and anal fins – shaped like a triangle.

  • Size:

    • In aquariums: 6 inches (15 cm) body height + long fins (up to 8 inches).

    • In the wild: slightly smaller due to predators.

  • Color Variants:

    • Wild type: silver with 3–4 black vertical stripes.

    • Aquarium varieties: gold, marble, zebra, koi, albino, platinum.

  • Behavior:

    • Semi-aggressive, especially during breeding.

    • Intelligent, recognize owners, and establish dominance hierarchies.

  • Diet: Omnivores – eat small worms, insects, crustaceans, algae, and commercial flakes/pellets.

  • Breeding:

    • Form monogamous pairs.

    • Lay eggs on flat surfaces (leaves, glass, or slate).

    • Both parents guard eggs and fry.

  • Lifespan: 8–12 years in aquariums with good care.

🌊 Marine Angelfish (Family: Pomacanthidae)

  • Distribution: Tropical coral reefs of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.

  • Size: 4–24 inches (10–60 cm), depending on species.

  • Colors: Brightly patterned in blues, yellows, oranges, and blacks – among the most striking reef fish.

  • Special Feature:

    • A spine under each gill cover, used for defense.

    • Juveniles often look very different from adults (dramatic color changes with age).

  • Diet:

    • Many species eat sponges and tunicates.

    • Also graze on algae, plankton, and small invertebrates.

  • Popular Species:

    • Emperor Angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator) – blue & yellow striped, with dramatic juvenile pattern.

    • Queen Angelfish (Holacanthus ciliaris) – vivid blue and yellow, considered one of the most beautiful reef fish.

    • Flame Angelfish (Centropyge loricula) – smaller, bright orange-red with black vertical bars.

  • Behavior:

    • Territorial, especially larger species.

    • Some live in harems (one male, several females).

  • Lifespan: 10–15 years in the wild; shorter in captivity if not cared for properly.

🌟 Symbolism & Cultural Meaning

  • Associated with grace, purity, and beauty.

  • In Feng Shui, angelfish in aquariums are thought to bring luck, harmony, and prosperity.

  • Their “angelic” fins give them their name.
